about

In the run-up to the release of my soundtrack for Views from Sunk Island (2021) on Subexotic Records, I’ve decided to collect together and release some of the music I’ve composed and recorded for other underground documentary productions over the last decade or so.

Ranging from my early glitchy electronica and cinematic synthwave under the name Conflux, to later minimalist ambient works and noisy radiophonic experiments, my music for documentaries often transcended the usual background atmospherics, also attempting to convey the vast scale of natural phenomena, evoking the sublime or trying to find the hidden emotion in big abstract ideas. Quantum physics, cosmogeny, the nature of time, praxis, urban decay and migration - regardless of the overarching theme, these diverse films and their soundtracks were always traversing some strange intersection of art, science and philosophy.

This collection looks at the music now in its own right, away from the original audiovisual contexts, to see what other pictures and ideas these sounds might help invoke. I wanted to let these tracks try and speak for themselves on this release -- but just let me know if you're interested, and I can provide you with a list of the original films this music featured in.

Equally, if you are interested in licensing any of this music for a new documentary production, do get in touch.

Bonus tracks note:

Scouring old video editing projects and dusty hard drives I have found two more edits used in the final documentary soundtracks, including the extreme time---stretch version of Lomo I made for Punctum Temporis (see video at the top of the release page), a short film about the nature of time.

I've now added these as bonus tracks to the end of the album.
